Animage and Ghibli

Daimaru Shimonoseki
Finished
This exhibition focuses on the period from the founding of the magazine "Animage" (Tokuma Shoten) in 1978 to the 1980s. Over 40 years ago, there was a significant leap forward for anime. Works like "Space Battleship Yamato" and "Mobile Suit Gundam" enthralled young anime fans. The magazine that conveyed the candid words of the creators, connecting them with the viewers, was "Animage." This collaboration between creators and viewers, facilitated by the magazine, contributed to the prosperity of Japanese animation that continues to this day.

"Animage," which discovered many anime creators, encountered two exceptional talents- Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata. From the serialization in "Animage" came the film "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind." This led to the establishment of Studio Ghibli, a new space for creating works that satisfied their vision, with the first film being "Castle in the Sky." Both directors, Takahata and Miyazaki, went on to create impactful films like "Grave of the Fireflies" and "My Neighbor Totoro." "Animage," while being a magazine, continued to send out their works and convey their words to the audience.

There was a time when magazine production and animated film production were closely linked. This exhibition reflects on the role of the magazine "Animage" in the birth and development of many anime works through extensive displays of magazine pages and valuable production materials. It highlights how the people behind "Animage," with the same spirit, went on to establish Studio Ghibli and continue delivering their works to the present day.
