Ansei Uchima
Ansei Uchima (1921-2000) was born in America and studied at Waseda University in 1940. Influenced by the creative prints of Takashi Onchi and others after the war, he began creating woodblock prints. He deepened the traditional techniques of ukiyo-e and established his method called "iroe" (color weaving), producing a series called "Forest Byobu" with prints extending up to 45 degrees.

Uchima's woodblock prints feature a complex composition with layers of vibrant colors harmoniously blended, and subtle gradations that exude a quiet elegance throughout the entire image, despite the multitude of colors.

In this exhibition, visitors can view woodblock prints, oil paintings, and copperplate prints, and a catalog containing representative works will be published (pre-sale price: 1,000 yen + tax).

* From May 13th to July 15th, the exhibition "Japanese Artists in New York" will be held at the Waseda University Aizu Yaichi Memorial Museum, where works by Ansei Uchima will also be exhibited.
