Aquirax Uno (1934–), a leading Japanese illustrator and graphic designer, has made a significant impact. In the 1960s, he popularized the terms “illustration” and “illustrator” in Japan and has remained a legendary figure, constantly evolving with the times. His work spans a wide range of fields, including illustrations, posters, picture books, books, animated films, paintings, and stage design. Since his debut in the early 1950s, his activities have continually expanded.
This exhibition is the largest ever dedicated to Uno, covering his entire body of work from his early years to his most recent creations. It features a diverse array of valuable original works and materials, including 1950s corporate advertisements, underground theater posters from the 1960s, picture books and children’s books, and recent paintings themed around haiku and girls. The exhibition delves into Uno’s exquisite and aesthetically captivating creative world that transcends time, produced by the “Enchanting Southpaw.”
