Are You a Dog Person or a Cat Person? - From Sotatsu Tawaraya, Seiho Takeuchi, and Leonard Fujita to Akira Yamaguchi

Yamatane Museum of Art
Starts 5/12
In recent years, the pet boom has been showing even more excitement. Among them, dogs and cats, the most beloved animals, have been depicted in Japanese paintings since ancient times. Even in modern times, many painters have created works featuring their beloved dogs and cats. This time, Yamatane Museum of Art is holding an exhibition introducing masterpieces featuring dogs and cats as subjects.

One of the highlights of this exhibition is the first public display of "Western Dogs and Courtesan Screen" (private collection), a valuable piece depicting Western dogs, which was rare in Japan at the time.

In the work "Dog" by the founder of the Rinpa school, Sotatsu Tawaraya (private collection), a playful puppy is charmingly depicted in ink wash. In Jakuchu Ito's "Puppies" (private collection), the contrast between two puppies in black and white catches the eye, while in Rosetsu Nagasawa's "Chrysanthemum and Puppies" (private collection), adorable puppies are depicted with rich expressions. On the other hand, when it comes to famous works featuring cats, one cannot overlook "Tabby Cat" by Seiho Takeuchi, a leading figure in the modern Kyoto art world, designated as an Important Cultural Property. Takeuchi, captivated by a cat he encountered by chance in Numazu, Shizuoka, completed the work through careful observation and sketching. Additionally, "Portrait of Mrs. Y" (Mitsui Sumitomo Bank, Limited) by Leonard Fujita, who sometimes replaces signatures with cat drawings, is a charming piece depicting a woman and four cats. Furthermore, "Catching Cranes" (private collection) by the contemporary artist Akira Yamaguchi depicts the individuality of anthropomorphized cats.

This exhibition brings together a variety of works featuring dogs and cats from the Edo period to the present day. Additionally, fine works featuring other familiar animals will also be introduced. Adorable dogs and cats are looking forward to your visit.
