Artists

Arinori Ichihara et al.
Arinori Ichihara (1910-2010) was born in Tokushima Prefecture and, at a young age, migrated with his parents. He spent his entire life in Otaru and became an internationally renowned printmaker, passing away at the age of 100 in 2010.

For Ichihara, his thirties were marked by the dark times of war. He was enlisted in the military at the age of 34. Reflecting on his works later in life, he remarked, "In a time strongly influenced by a sense of tragedy for people of our age, it was born within the military life that made us feel like we were in a prison without a sentence." He declared, "There is no firm worldview towards art" and consistently refused to be associated with any specific motif, except for acknowledging the impact of his war experiences.

Many critics found images of war experiences in the organic material created by the corrosive plates and in Ichihara's seemingly cold and unreal world. However, Ichihara himself asserted that the production process was "an experimental product without intervening images."

This exhibition will showcase Ichihara's works overlaid with his words about his war experiences. Additionally, it will feature works by other painters who were active during the same period and whose artistic endeavors were influenced by wartime experiences.
