Atsuo Imaizumi and Art

Yonezawa City Uesugi Museum
Finished
Atsuo Imaizumi (1902-1984), born in Yonezawa City, was an art critic who began his critical activities before World War II and covered a wide range of fields related to arts and crafts in Japan and abroad. He was also the first deputy director of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, and the first director of the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto.

In addition to his work at the National Museum of Modern Art, he was involved in the management of many other museums, including the Shiseido Gallery, and as a critic, he raised the issue of "modern painting" in Japan in the 1950s, which triggered the "Imaizumi whirlwind." This exhibition introduces the diverse work of Atsuo Imaizumi through the works of artists associated with him and his words.
