Contemporary Tokyo is pleased to present Memory of Water, a solo exhibition by contemporary artist Ayaïro, opening on Saturday, June 28. This exhibition features 14 new artworks centered around the theme of "water," exploring memories that surface through water-related landscapes.
Ayaïro has long pursued a style that visualizes internal landscapes by overlapping nostalgic scenes from Japan with her own personal memories and emotions. In her early works, she intentionally depicted vivid and fragmented childhood memories using bright, primary colors. In recent years, however, her style has evolved to incorporate softer tones and more delicate brushwork, capturing the subtleties of recollection and emotional shifts experienced in adulthood.
In this latest series, water is approached as a symbol of this duality in memory—representing both the vivid clarity of childhood, such as playing by rivers or puddles after the rain, and the hazy reverie evoked by the movement and shimmer of water. While maintaining her characteristically flat, two-dimensional compositions, Ayaïro experiments with rendering textures and depth in elements such as water surfaces and clouds, offering a sense of temporal and spatial expansion within each piece.
Marking the fifth anniversary of her artistic practice, cultural studies scholar Hiroki Yamamoto offers the following commentary:
"Within these five years, Ayaïro's unwavering focus on memory—ranging from deeply personal, foundational landscapes to a recent turn toward collective memory—has become ever more apparent. The convergence of these perspectives hints at exciting possibilities for her future development."
In conjunction with the exhibition, an archival book compiling five years of her creative journey will also be available for purchase at the venue.
