Artists

Ayumi Okita
Ayumi Okita creates paintings using urushi lacquer as a medium. Drawing on the long history of lacquer painting traditions that developed across East and Southeast Asia, the artist reimagines this material through a contemporary perspective.

In recent years, Okita has focused on the origins of urushi as a plant-based resin, exploring how the material can respond in ways that go beyond the artist’s intentions. The process of working with lacquer becomes a dialogue with the material itself, approached as a form of collaboration between artist and medium.

Through an exploration of lacquer culture, nature, femininity, boundaries and processes of becoming, Okita presents a new body of work created especially for this exhibition.
