Beautiful Utopia -Portraits of modern Japanese people who dreamed of an ideal land-

Ueda City Museum of Art
Until Jun 7
In his book "News from Utopia," British social thinker William Morris advocated for the integration of life and art. The word "utopia" originally meant "a place that does not exist." This idea of examining the challenges of the here and now and dreaming of an ideal that does not exist anywhere, was introduced in 20th-century Japan, where it became a way of thinking about ideals and challenges surrounding life in art, crafts, architecture, and more. It also led to the search for communities that connect a wide range of genres.

This exhibition explores the past and ways of imagining the future of "beautiful utopia" through a wide range of exhibits, including the art movements of Yamamoto Kanae, Yanagi Muneyoshi, Miyazawa Kenji, and Takehisa Yumeji, works by Matsumoto Shunsuke and others, design surveys, and materials related to Antonin Raymond and Inoue Fusichiro.
