Buddhist Paintings by Artists - Joshunsai Again!

Otani Memorial Art Museum, Nishinomiya City
Finished

Artists

Ike no Taiga, Joshunsai Katsube, Zaichu Hara et al.
Since the mid-6th century, when Buddhism was first introduced to Japan, Buddhist paintings (butsu-ga) have been widely produced to spread the teachings of Buddhism. In the Edo period (1603-1867), the demand for Buddhist paintings increased due to the danka system promoted by the shogunate, and even more painters became involved in the production of Buddhist paintings. Painting Buddhist paintings was one of the most important jobs for painters in the Edo period.

This exhibition introduces Buddhist paintings of the Edo period created by painters. Although most of the works were painted according to a formula, each artist's individuality can also be felt.

In addition, "Thirty-three Kannon Paintings" by Joshunsai Katsube (owned by Mosho-ji Temple) will be on view again, bringing together all 33 paintings from the 2017 exhibition, "Kano School in Nishinomiya: Joshunsai Katsube," which was held in two phases with 17 paintings each.

In addition, the exhibition will also include Zaichu Hara's "The Thirty-three Kannon Pavilions" (owned by Jonan Ikkyu-ji), which is a copy of a work by Meicho in the collection of Tofuku-ji Temple, as well as Joshunsai.

This exhibition will be a rare opportunity to see a part of the world of Buddhist painting of the Edo period that has not received much attention until now.
