Byobu Folding Screens and Books

Yoshizawa Memorial Museum of Art, Sano
Finished
A folding screen decorates a space for welcoming people, while a book is read by one or a small group of people. While they are different in size, the way they are painted, and the distance between them and the viewer, they have one thing in common: when opened, a picture appears.

This exhibition introduces the charms of byobu and books by comparing how a similar subject was depicted in a byobu and a book. The exhibition will also introduce how contemporary viewers appreciated the paintings and how they became familiar with them in their daily lives, specifically by showing the traces of marks, writings, and stains stamped on the screens in the paintings and the books.

In addition, many of the works will be changed between the first and second periods, with each thematically organized. Visitors will enjoy the rich seasonal splendor of byobu and the intellectual interest of books, which guide people into the world of stories and unknown foreign countries.

First period: January 21 - March 5
