Charles Munka was born in Lyon in the south of France and lived in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Tokyo before moving to Sado Island, where he currently lives and works, influenced by the environment around him.
In 2020, in Wajima, Noto Peninsula, 50 nautical miles southwest of Sado, he met lacquer craftsman Kohei Kirimoto through the Japan Artisan Foundation, and the "Ghost Links" series was created.
This exhibition consists of ten works- eight paintings inspired by the process and techniques of Wajima-nuri, and two sculptures created by Munka and Kirimoto using buoys found on the beach.
The work made from buoys, painted with black and vermilion lacquer over six months to make approximately 20 bowls, are aged to give them the appealing texture of old lacquerware.
