Artists

Charlotte Dumas
Charlotte Dumas, a leading Dutch photographer and artist, will exhibit simultaneously in Roppongi and Tennozu.

For more than 20 years, Dumas has been photographing animals closely related to humans, such as horses and rescue dogs. Her works, which capture beautiful moments of the coexistence of animals and people in modern society and the fragility of life, are highly acclaimed around the world.

She has visited Japan frequently and started a project to photograph native Japanese horses in 2014, and in the "'Pesoire' Charlotte Dumas Exhibition" held at the Maison Hermes Forum in Ginza in 2020, she created an installation of photographs, videos, objects, and indigo-dyed cloth, which was a huge hit. The exhibition attracted a great deal of attention for its lush world of artworks that could be experienced in the entire space. This will be her second solo exhibition at the gallery, having first exhibited for only five days in 2018.

At Roppongi, Dumas will present his "Ao " photographs (2016-2021) and new ink drawings, which will be shown for the first time in Japan. At Tennoz, the video work "Ao" (2022), his latest work, will be shown. "Ao" is a series of works since 2015, he has been photographing native horses and their scenes and girls in Yonaguni Island and Okinawa. (Including some shot in Brittany during the period when he could not come to Japan due to COVID-19).

On Yonaguni Island in the 18th century, there was a sad history and myth that pregnant women were forced to jump over a crevice in the rocks due to population decline. Today, the island's population is declining and the number of vacant houses is increasing, but the small, skinny native horses roam the shores there unchecked and will remain on the island for the rest of their lives.

As Dumas continued to photograph the island, she says she began to feel an attachment to the land itself, a variety of emotions, and even a spiritual strength surrounding the island.
The horses, seemingly free and lonely, and the girl who dances alongside the horses and on the beach. Dumas says, "What children and animals have in common is that they live 100% in the present." The girl, who seems to be a force of nature herself, seems to be the "eye" that depicts the island.

"Ao" is the conclusion of a trilogy of films, “Shio Tide" (2018) and "Yorishiro" (2020), which were also screened at the Ginza Maison Hermes Forum.

The project on Yonaguni Island, Okinawa, was a creative encounter, including with textile artist Yuko Kitta, which led to collaborations with other artists and the creation of a mysterious fluidity in the world of Dumas' work.

This exhibition is a beautiful scene that seems to have been created in the moment of experiencing the flow of time and our connection with others.
