Chikuseki Okuda and the Modern Painters of Mie

Sekisui Museum
Finished

Artists

Chikuseki Okuda, Sashu Nakamura, Gosen Kawaguchi et al.
Okuda Chikuseki (1901–77) was a Nanga painter who was active in Tsu City, Mie Prefecture. After studying under Chikuson Tajika in Kyoto, he returned to his hometown of Tsu, leaving behind numerous works and contributing to the guidance of younger artists.

Okuda was also an art teacher for Handeishi Kawakita (1878–1963). The coffered ceiling and fusuma paintings in the "Koubai-kaku" at Chitoseyama Villa, built by Kawakita in 1930 for his grandmother's memorial, were created by Okuda.

This exhibition introduces work by Okuda, including those recently donated, along with work by other painters associated with Mie Prefecture, such as Sashu Nakamura and Gosen Kawaguchi, focusing on newly acquired pieces.
