“Art Nouveau,” a French term meaning “new art,” refers to a movement and style in the arts, principally in Europe, in the latter half of the nineteenth century and the start of the twentieth. In that period, when the role of supporting the arts had long since shifted from royalty and the nobility to the bourgeoisie, momentum was growing to seek a new style of art that suited the time, instead of a pastiche of styles from the past. Artists’ eyes turned towards the graceful curves in the natural world— the gentle contour lines of plants’ stems and petals, the supple lines of swans’ necks when their heads are tilted.
That period also demanded artistic qualities in everything around us: not just architecture, paintings, and sculpture but also furniture, wall paper, and everyday tableware. Ceramics, metalwork, and even posters and other graphics became more lavishly decorative. Glass vessels and lamps were a field in which this new style made dramatic progress.

This exhibition presents glass vessels and lamps, plus furniture, by Baccarat, Émile Gallé, and the Daum Frères, the artists who exemplify French Art Nouveau. Please enjoy a world of glass suffused with gentle light and interiors characterized by smooth, flowing lines.
