Setsuryosha Museum of Art holds exhibitions focusing on outstanding artists from Niigata, introducing them in solo exhibition format. This time, we feature Masuo Hara, a metalworking artist residing in Kashiwazaki City.
As the seventh generation of the Okubo Chokin-Hara family lineage tracing back to the Muromachi period in Kashiwazaki City, Hara has been at the forefront. After graduating from the former Kashiwazaki Technical School's mechanical department, he apprenticed under Mika Kitahara, a director of the Japan Kogei Association, learning much. Encouraged by Shugo Renjo, a recipient of the Order of Culture, who said, 'Try submitting to the Nitten,' Hara made his debut at the age of 23 and was selected for the first time, achieving consecutive selections for 11 years, eventually becoming unexamined. His work 'Fine Weather,' abstractly depicting three birds created at the age of 26, shone as an outstanding piece ahead of its time.
Subsequently, Hara received the Prime Minister's Award at the Japan Contemporary Crafts Exhibition and the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's Award at the Nitten. At the age of 72, he became the only resident of Niigata Prefecture to receive the Japan Art Academy Prize, recognized as an outstanding artist.
This year marks Hara's 80th birthday. Reflecting on his entire body of work, with a focus on his submissions to the Nitten and the Japan Contemporary Crafts Exhibition, this exhibition traces the trajectory of Masuo Hara's career."
