Conveying the Realities of the Minamata Disease

National Museum of Ethnology
Finished
It has been almost 70 years since the discovery of Minamata disease. Currently, in the Minamata and Ashikita regions of Kumamoto Prefecture, various activities such as exhibitions, guided tours, photographs, and storytelling sessions are carried out to convey the history of Minamata disease, the suffering of its victims, and the town's efforts to use the experience of pollution for community development. Who are the individuals involved in these activities, and what motivations drive them? How are words, objects, images, and locations utilized in these efforts? This exhibition explores the appeal of activities aimed at conveying Minamata disease and the potential lessons that can be learned from them.
