Creation of New Prints

Nakagawa-machi Bato Hiroshige Museum of Art
Finished
Ukiyo-e gradually lost its momentum as the Meiji era unfolded. However, in the Taisho era, new woodblock prints aiming to revive and modernize traditional woodblock printing were created. These "Shin-Hanga" (new prints) possessed high artistic qualities and were received with astonishment both in Japan and abroad as the emergence of a new form of Japanese art.

This exhibition explores the new creative possibilities in traditional woodblock printing through various works by artists who excelled in "Shin-Hanga," such as Hasui Kawase and Hiroshi Yoshida.
