After publishing the photo book "Bye Bye Photography" in 1972, where he reached the pinnacle of Ale, Blur, and Bokeh photography, Moriyama entered a period of decline and struggled with his relationship with photography. During this time, he was approached by Akira Suei, then editor-in-chief of "Shashin Jidai" magazine, and began a series titled "Light and Shadow" in 1981. This series captured mundane subjects such as flowers, cars, and street signs, and was later compiled into a photo book of the same name, winning the Japan Photographers Association Award. In these works, the contrast between light and shadow is replaced by the grayscale of black-and-white photography, while the sharpness of the images vividly records the textures of each subject.
From 1982 to 1983, Moriyama serialized "Inu no Kioku" (Dog's Memories) in "Asahi Camera," accompanied by autobiographical texts alongside his photographic works. In 1987, he published a homage photo book titled "Tabi e no Tabi" (Journey to Journey) dedicated to his fellow photographer from the same region, Nakaji Yasui. Moriyama continued to question the essence of photography and reconstruct his connection with the medium. In the 1990s, he further expanded his endeavors by publishing "Letter to St. Lou" (1990), inspired by the photographic techniques of Nicéphore Niépce, and collaborating with the fashion brand Hysteric Glamour for "Daido Hysteric."
