Gallery Out of Place is pleased to present Ad Parnassum - Purapurawhetū, a video exhibition by Daniel Belton & Good Company Arts. (Prints will also be shown.) This will be the first presentation of new video works in Japan in five years since their solo exhibition in Tokyo. The Latin title Ad Parnassum translates as 'To Parnassus' and the artist was inspired to create this work by Bauhaus artist Paul Klee's 1932 painting of the same name. The Maori word Purapurawhetū also means 'star seed' or 'people from the stars.' The video and print works shown in the exhibition will encourage viewers to have a vision of humans as 'star beings' or 'star things.' Mount Parnassus is closely linked to the Greek mythology of Apollo, the home of the Muse, and was considered a sacred poetic symbol in ancient Greece. In literature, 'Parnassos' generally refers to the source of poetry, literature and learning. The word Parnassos is thought to derive from Parnassos, the possessive adjective of the Luvian word parna, meaning house or temple, and refers to the mountain of the house of the gods and muses. The nine Muses stand out in Greek culture as beauties of music, song, dance, poetry, history, astronomy, tragedy, harmony and love.
