Denchu Hirakushi
This exhibition is in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of Kodaira City and the 150th anniversary of the birth of sculptor Denchu Hirakushi (1872-1979). Hirakushi was born in 1872 in Ibara, Okayama as the eldest son of the Tanaka family (or Katayama family, according to one theory), and was adopted by the Hiragushi family in 1882 in Imazu Village, Numakuma County (present-day Fukuyama City), Hiroshima.

In Osaka, where he worked as a young man, he became interested in art and studied sculpture under Shoko Nakatani, a doll maker, and then moved to Tokyo and became a student of Koun Takamura. Thereafter, through exchanges with Tenshin Okakura, a leader in the art world, and Hozan Nishiyama, a high priest of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism, he sought his own expression in sculpture and produced works that conveyed a deep spirituality, using Buddhist tales and Chinese folklore as their subjects.

In the Taisho period (1912-1926), he studied plasticity using models and showed the results in "Tensei" and "Oryu Sensei," etc. From the early Showa period (1926-1989) onward, he sought the possibility of expression between "tradition" and "modernity" while experimenting with color, which was considered an evil practice and this search bore fruit in the gorgeous "Kagami-jishi" (mirror lion) that is currently displayed in the hall of the National Theatre, Tokyo. In 1962, he was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit for his achievements in the field of sculpture.

This exhibition features representative works from the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods from all over Japan, and introduces the whole picture of this inimitable sculptor in the light of recent art historical research results.
