Denchu Hirakushi Exhibition

Kodaira Hirakushi Denchu Art Museum
Finished

Artists

Denchu Hirakushi
Renowned for numerous outstanding woodcarving works, Denchu Hirakushi created sculptures by first molding them in clay, making plaster molds of the sculptures, and then transferring the forms to wood using a tool called the "hoshitori-ki." This method, known as the "hoshitori-ho" (star-picking method), involves treating the plaster that emerges during the production process as a special plaster prototype in the art world. In cases where woodcarving works are lost for various reasons, these plaster prototypes become especially valuable.

This exhibition showcases the plaster prototypes of Denchu Hirakushi passed down to the museum, offering insights into Hirakushi's production process and sculpting techniques.
