YOD TOKYO is pleased to present Disrupting Depth, a group exhibition featuring works by Yohei Sugiyama, Haruhi Takei, and Shotaro Murakami. The “depth” in the title does not merely refer to spatial perspective, but to the layered strata of experience and memory that dwell within the everyday. The act of “disrupting” indicates an attempt to flatten, reconfigure, and reanimate those strata from alternative viewpoints. Through their respective practices, the three artists “disrupt” familiar contours of reality and unsettle the frameworks of the everyday.

Sugiyama delves into motifs centered on plants, positioning them between abstraction and figuration. Moving fluidly between digital methods and analog techniques such as dyes, his works do not simply depict the motifs themselves, but reveal the generative processes and latent meanings that underlie their forms.
Takei, while engaging with the visual culture of advertising and apparel, develops an artistic practice that draws together everyday life and fantasy. His light, flowing lines and stylized forms of humans, plants, and animals dismantle familiar visual signs, allowing them to reemerge with renewed imaginative narratives.
Murakami, with a background in textile studies, translates his sensitivity to layered color into the medium of colored pencil. His vivid renderings of flowers and fruits do not function as straightforward reproductions, but rather deconstruct the motifs into accumulations of color, transforming them into tactilely intense images.
The motifs depicted by the three artists are not necessarily “realistic.” Yet the density of information embedded within them points beyond reality itself, suggesting unseen layers of lived experience and perception.

This exhibition invites viewers to reconsider the relation between “seeing” and “perceiving depth.” We hope you will enjoy the exhibition.
