Established in 1930, the Ohara Museum of Art began with the support of industrialist Magosaburo Ohara (1880-1943) and the collection of Western art centered around modernity, curated by the Western-style painter Torajiro Kojima (1881-1929). While the collection expanded to include modern Western art, modern and contemporary Japanese art, and works related to the Mingei movement, its core remains late 19th to early 20th-century art. The museum itself is a cultural legacy born of modernity.
This exhibition aims to utilize the rich history and collection of the Ohara Museum of Art to explore the characteristics and allure of modern art from the perspective of cultural fusion and hybridization. Through the lens of cultural exchange, the exhibition will attempt to:
1. Reevaluate modern art uniquely represented by the Ohara Museum of Art. 2. Present new exhibitions aligned with the perspective of cultural exchange. 3. Recreate the spirit of the times through artworks and archival materials.
Through these endeavors, the exhibition seeks to introduce the charm of modern art and the Ohara Museum of Art from a fresh perspective.
