Double Annual is an internal selection exhibition between Kyoto University of the Arts and Tohoku University of Art and Design.
For Double Annual, a theme is set for each exhibition, and artwork proposals are solicited from students of both universities. The theme for this call was "Inquiry in Progress." This word was chosen with consideration of our psychological states and the actions occurring within as the world navigates through the next phase post-pandemic. Many proposals were received with an open-minded approach, emphasizing the questioning itself rather than seeking definite answers to respond to this keyword.
Ten finalists, selected after passing through the first round of document screening and the second round of interviews, will develop their proposals in dialogue with the directorial team. Interestingly, the image of a "vessel" emerged during this process- be it consciousness and body, oneself and society, or empty spaces of land, among others. The mismatch between the contents and the vessel's purpose and size always gives rise to various questions, both big and small.
As the times change, individuals begin to feel discomfort with existing frameworks and familiar sensations, eventually leading to significant, undeniable gaps. Artists are particularly sensitive to these initial shifts.
However, the participating artists in this exhibition do not necessarily perceive these mismatches as negative. Rather than attempting to forcibly bridge the gaps or distances, they seem to be reaching out to somewhere or someone distant. They may reflect the ambiguous duality within themselves, or derive creative and new visions from these situations.
Questions and answers are not always directly connected. Sometimes, unexpected and interesting discoveries emerge, much like "finding a needle in a haystack."
