Eisei-Bunko Japanese Lacquer Art Collection - Masterpieces

Eisei-Bunko Museum
Finished
Lacquerware has long been a part of people's lives. In China, techniques such as mother-of-pearl inlays (raden), carved lacquer (chōshitsu), and gold leaf inlays were developed. In Japan, the maki-e process, in which gold, silver, and colored powders are sprinkled, was developed, resulting in numerous works. The "brilliance" of these works attracted Westerners and Asians, and lacquerware became a symbol of the Orient.

The Eisei-Bunko's vast collection of lacquerware includes a wide variety of items, such as furniture for feudal lords, horse harnesses, tea ceremony utensils, and musical instruments. Furthermore, one of the unique features of the collection is that work produced not only in Japan but also in China, the Korean Peninsula, Ryukyu, and Southeast Asia can be found. This exhibition introduces selected pieces, including the Shigure Radenkura (National Treasure), displayed for the first time in 16 years, along with the latest research results.
