Fugensha is pleased to present the solo exhibition Moon Rainbow by Eri Morita, winner of the Grand Prize at the 4th Fugensha Photography Award, from Friday, July 4 to Sunday, July 27, 2025. Accompanying the exhibition, a photobook which shares the same title will be published by Fugensha.

Eri Morita is a photographer originally from Kumamoto Prefecture, currently based in San Diego, California. After graduating from the Department of English and American Literature at Ferris University, she moved to the United States. In 1997, she completed the General Studies program at the International Center of Photography (ICP). The following year, in 1998, she received The Sanctuary Excellence Award (selected by Takashi Homma) at the 7th New Cosmos of Photography competition. In 2004, she was awarded the Grand Prize at the 5th Shinpusha-Hirama Itaru Photography Award, and in 2005, she published her photo book Home Drama.

At the 4th Fugensha Photography Award held in 2024, Morita was selected from among 192 applicants (a new record). Her latest photobook Moon Rainbow will be published by Fugensha in July 2025.

This body of work documents 18 years of life with her family of three. After giving birth to her daughter in New York, they moved to Maui, Hawaii, where they began their journey to find a place to put down roots as a family. After living in Tokyo, Shanghai, Kumamoto, and Miyazaki, and then drifting to Santa Monica, California, they traversed the coastline and finally settled in the seaside city of San Diego.

Morita saw the rhythmic flickering light on the monitor during a prenatal checkup — a child laughing for the first time, standing for the first time, speaking for the first time, and gradually acquiring values. Each step was an endless surprise and an ongoing reinvigoration of experience for the artist. She sought to understand the family’s existence through the act of photography — a complex entity imbued with joy, comfort, suffering, and loneliness.

With a clear gaze and distance, Morita captured her family over nearly two decades. The resulting body of work transcends the genre of private-documentary, connecting to a universal narrative of family that crosses boundaries.

Although she was unable to photograph the rainbow that once appeared in the night sky over Maui — a moment shared with her family — the memory of that scene remained in her heart and became a symbol of light and time, and thus inspired the title Moon Rainbow.

The photobook Moon Rainbow, designed by Satoshi Machiguchi — who served as a judge for the 4th Fugensha Photography Award — will be revealed alongside the exhibition.
