The Manyoshu is considered the oldest collection of Japanese poems, believed to have been compiled around the end of the Nara period. It contains over 4,500 poems, including long poems, short poems, and hanka, and features poets from various social classes, ranging from emperors to commoners. Due to the long period over which the poems were composed- spanning over 100 years- the Manyoshu is divided into four periods for stylistic analysis: the first period covers the era from Jomei to the Jinshin War, the second period extends from the Jinshin War to the relocation of the capital to Nara (AD 710), the third period covers the time from the capital's relocation to the fifth year of Tenpyo, and the fourth period spans from the sixth year of Tenpyo to the third year of Jingo-keiun.
This exhibition focuses on seven representative poets from each period- Nukata no Okimi, Kakinomoto no Hitomaro, Yamabe no Akahito, Yamabe no Obito, Otomo no Tabito, Otomo no Sakanoue no Iratsume, and Otomo no Yakamochi- and showcase items from our collection, such as 'Manyo Nihonga' paintings, classical books, and ceramic dolls. The exhibition introduces the achievements and lives of these poets through art pieces, providing a glimpse into the era when the Manyo poems were composed."
