The national treasure "Kosetsusamonji" owned by Fukuyama Museum of Art is a sword made by the Chikuzen Province swordsmith Samonji in the Nanbokucho Period and is known as the favorite sword of Kosetsusai Itabeoka, a general of the Hojo clan in the Warring States Period. Later, when Itabeoka became a vassal of Ieyasu Tokugawa, the sword came into the possession of Ieyasu, who gave it to his tenth son, Yorinobu. Yorinobu is said to have worn the sword in the first battle of the Osaka Winter Campaign. In 1933, it was designated as a former national treasure and remained in the Kishu Tokugawa family until 1934, when it was sold to the Nagao Museum of Art. It then became the property of Yasuhiro Komatsu, an honorary citizen of Fukuyama City, and was donated to the Fukuyama Museum of Art in 2018, where it remains to this day.
This special exhibition will display “Kosetsusamonji" along with items loved by its former owners, carefully examining what can be learned from the famous blade and its accessories, and unraveling the story hidden in the sword.
