Boys' love (BL) is a fictional genre that deals with romance between men. Traditionally, BL has been developed in novels and manga, but in recent years, visual works have increased and are becoming more widely recognized. BL dramas from around the world can be seen on TV and the Internet.
Looking back in history, Mari Mori became the first female author in Japan to write about male-on-male romance in the 1960s, and in the 1970s, Keiko Takemiya and other shōjo manga artists began to draw romances between boys, so-called "shōnen-ai" works. Later, in 1978, the first specialized magazine “June" was published, and since then, BL has created various subcultures and expanded its horizons.
In 1992, Kadokawa Shoten (now Kadokawa) launched "Kadokawa Ruby Bunko" as a library label that mainly dealt with aesthetic and BL novels. It became a place for creators who grew up with the magazine “June."
This exhibition will introduce the epoch-making works and movements of each era, along with their original drawings, books, magazines, videos, and chronologies. and those who are new to BL can learn more about the culture.
In the exhibition hall, visitors will be able to see the “dash”* illustrations and original illustrations by Keiko Takemiya, Yu Asagiri, Sawa Sakuraku, and others, original manuscripts of novels by Azusa Nakajima (Kaoru Kurimoto), BL magazines that have ceased publication, and other valuable exhibits. In addition, voice actor Tomoyuki Morikawa will narrate in some areas of the venue.
*"Dash" is an elaborate reproduction of an original manga manuscript that is printed on a computer after careful color adjustments. This is a project of Kyoto Seika University International Manga Research Center/Kyoto International Manga Museum, led by manga artist Keiko Takemiya.
