This exhibition introduces a portion of the half-century work of Kazuko Ono, an independent folktale collector, through two books published by Pumpquakes--"Journey to Meet and Listen" (2019) and "Unforgettable Japanese: People Who Tell Folktales" (2024). Ono has continued her journey of collecting folktales by visiting each house in the deep mountain villages and coastal towns of the Tohoku region, mainly in Miyagi Prefecture. What kind of activity was this?
The exhibition will feature materials such as Ono's fieldwork diaries, publications from the Miyagi Folktale Society, and maps. Additionally, works by photographer Lieko Shiga and painter Sotaro Kikuchi, who provided cover art for the books, will be displayed. During the exhibition period, there will also be screenings of the documentary film "The Singing People" (directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi & Ko Sakai / silent voice) featuring the author, as well as a talk event with director Hamaguchi.
