Foreign Lands as Seen Through Ukiyo-e

Kawasaki Ukiyo-e Gallery Saito Fumio Collection
Finished
During the Edo period, Japanese citizens were prohibited from traveling abroad, yet through trade in places like Dejima in Nagasaki, foreign artifacts and information were consistently brought into Japan. Imported goods like glass were highly valued, and they were also depicted in ukiyo-e prints. Artists incorporated Western painting techniques such as perspective and shading into their works, creating new forms of expression. This exhibition showcases Nagasaki-e prints depicting foreigners, mud paintings utilizing perspective, and more, offering a glimpse into the foreign influences that touched the lives of people in Edo.
