"Forms of People: Taro Okamoto's Expressions of the Human Body"

Taro Okamoto Museum of Art, Kawasaki
Finished

Artists

Taro Okamoto
Despite the vividness of primary colors and strong thematic elements in Taro Okamoto's works, the impression of him as a "portrait artist" may not be strong. However, from his early days in Paris to his later years, many of the themes and central motifs depicted in his works revolve around the existence of humans, including their figures, faces, eyes, and inner selves.

The depictions of people in his paintings undergo various transitions based on the production period, ranging from orthodox representational portrayals to humorously personified characters and symbolically encoded figures resembling pictograms. Additionally, not only in paintings but also in motifs of three-dimensional works and monuments, such as "Tower of the Sun," there are many pieces that take the form of human figures.

This exhibition draws attention to Taro Okamoto's depictions of human forms, the variations in expression, and the breadth of his artistic range, including the flow of disappearance works from his Paris period that unfolded from his early masterpiece "Pathos of the Arm."
