Anjo City, which celebrated the 70th anniversary of its municipal organization in 2022, has adopted the basic philosophy of "a city where each and every citizen can experience happiness as well as affluence in their lives," and aims to realize "Anjo, a healthy city that leads to happiness," focusing on health as one of the five elements that enable people to experience affluence and happiness.
The word "health," which today refers to "a healthy mind and body with no physical defects," is said to have become popular since the Meiji period (1868-1912). From ancient times to the Edo period (1603-1867), the word “yojyo," which came from China, was used in Japan to mean nurturing life and health.
Later, with the influx of Western culture after the end of the Edo period, the concept of "health" was born. During the wartime period, the state encouraged the development of healthy bodies, which influenced various postwar health policies.
This exhibition introduces the evolution of the Japanese view of health from ancient times to the modern era, using documents and ukiyoe prints as well as episodes related to the health of famous people such as Tokugawa Ieyasu.
