In 2024, marking the 150th anniversary of the first Impressionist exhibition, we will hold an exhibition tracing the impact and influence that Impressionism had on Europe and America. In the late 19th century, many painters from abroad gathered in the bustling metropolis of Paris. These artists, who were exposed to and learned from Impressionism in Paris, brought the new painting techniques back to their own countries. This exhibition focuses on the innovative nature of Impressionism, which overturned the traditions of Western art, and its expansion, particularly highlighting the various aspects of Impressionism as it developed across the United States.
The Worcester Art Museum, located near Boston, USA, has actively collected Impressionist works since its opening in 1898. This exhibition, featuring a collection from the museum—most of which are being shown in Japan for the first time—will include well-known French Impressionists like Monet and Renoir, as well as works by German and Nordic artists, the internationally active Sargent, and Childe Hassam, a leading figure of American Impressionism. This will be a rare and valuable opportunity to encounter the previously little-known allure of American Impressionism, which has been seldom introduced in Japan.
