Geidai Collection 2023 Selections from the Purchased Excellent Student Works

The University Art Museum - Tokyo University of the Arts
Finished
The “purchasing" system was established by the Tokyo University of the Arts to select and purchase particularly outstanding graduation and completion works from each department. The Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, the predecessor of the Tokyo University of the Arts, also had a system of purchasing graduation works for its collection. This exhibition will look back on the history of art education in Japan from the Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko period to the present, selecting about 100 of the more than 10,000 "student works" in the university's collection.

Part 1: Student Works of the Masters
Since sending out its first graduates in 1893, Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko (Tokyo Art School) has collected student works, including self-portraits, as educational materials, focusing on graduation projects. This exhibition brings together a selection of artists from various fields who have led the history of modern Japanese art since their graduation and presents their debut works.

Part 2: Purchased Works Selected by Each Department
Tokyo University of the Arts has had a purchase system since 1953 to encourage graduating students. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the system. In recent years, research fields have expanded to include advanced artistic expression, conservation of cultural properties, global art practice, and film studies, and methods of expression have become more diverse. This year's exhibition, along with the selection intentions of each department, will highlight the trends in the purchased works that have been recognized as particularly outstanding by each department.
