Genealogy of Masked Performing Arts - Nara, the Hometown of Masked Performing Arts

Nara Prefectural Museum of Art
Finished
Japan has a rare culture in which masked performing arts have continued to live on since prehistoric times.

Starting with clay masks of the Jomon period, we have Gigaku, which was introduced from Baekje in the Nara period (710-794), and Gagaku and Bugaku, which came from the continent and were compiled in the Heian period (794-1192). Gagaku and bugaku were introduced from the continent and culminated in the Heian period (794-1185).

The origins of these genres are still shrouded in mystery, and they are connected to the Noh Kyogen, which developed from sarugaku in Yamato during the medieval period.

This special exhibition, held in commemoration of the museum's 50th anniversary, systematically introduces the masked performing arts that were nurtured in Nara. In addition to the masks used in the masked performing arts, costumes, musical instruments, historical materials, and reconstructed reproductions will be exhibited in a variety of ways.
