Gifts from the Sea

Onomichi City Museum of Art
Finished
The oldest gems known to mankind, such as pearls, jet, and amber, as well as the long-beloved coral, have been cherished since ancient times as talismans. They are mentioned in the world's oldest encyclopedia, "Natural History" by Pliny the Elder, for their medicinal properties and protective powers. Jewelry is often referred to as a "mirror reflecting the times," conveying the values of people who lived in that era to us today. Additionally, we understand that jewelry holds a role as a symbol of wealth and power.

This exhibition focuses on jewelry made from the most familiar natural materials, which could be seen as "gifts from the sea" such as pearls, coral, amber, and shells. Through the beauty of natural materials, the exquisite craftsmanship of artisans, and the richness of design, the exhibition hopes to provide insight into the splendor of jewelry culture through these captivating pieces.
