Goda Sawako: A Retrospective

Mitaka City Gallery of Art
Finished

Artists

Sawako Goda
Since her debut solo exhibition in 1965, Sawako Goda (1940-2016, born in Kochi, Japan) has pursued her creative activities across media, such as objects, paintings, and photography. Goda's expression demonstrated a strong affinity with fashion, film, and music and was supported by artists in various fields. On the other hand, Goda's work, which was not limited to a single style, and which kept a distance from the art trends and critical discourse of his time, was a peculiar existence outside the "canonical history" of art and was regarded as a personal and hobbyistic pursuit. This retrospective exhibition will examine her creative activities through more than 300 works and documents, from her early objects to a series of pencil drawings from her later years.
