This exhibition features a total of eight artists, four from Japan and four from Korea, in an international exchange exhibition.

HRD Fine Art previously organized "Gold Experience - Contemporary Gold Leaf Paintings from Japan and Korea" in Seoul in 2010, and "Gold Experience 2 - Dedicated to Kinshachi" in Aichi in 2012. This exhibition, "Gold Experience 3 - Metallusion," serves as the third installment after more than ten years, reintroducing artists from Japan and Korea who explore painting expressions using "gold leaf" and "metal leaf."

The exhibiting artists from Japan include Noriyori Shirakawa, Masako Yasuyuki, Ryoko Kimura, and Natsumi Nanashino, while those from Korea include Hyungjoo Park, Jungduk Song, Miyeon Lee, and Bona Koo. Each artist has different themes and techniques for using leaf.

The use of gold leaf in painting has a long and rich history in both Western and Eastern art. In the West, it has been utilized in techniques such as tempera painting, icons, and mosaic murals, while in the East, it has been employed in screens and fan paintings, evolving alongside different aesthetics, religious philosophies, and techniques. In modern Europe, the use of gold leaf as part of Japonism emerged at the end of the 19th century, while in the East, icons with golden backgrounds played significant roles in the dissemination of Christianity, symbolizing the crossover between Eastern and Western cultures.

While gold leaf is often perceived as a background material in paintings, its active role cannot be overlooked, whether in conveying religious solemnity, expressing infinite space, or boasting the prestige and power of its owner.

The subtitle of this exhibition, "Metallusion," is a neologism representing illusions and metaphors created by incorporating the shine and light of metals into paintings, fusion of various painting techniques and cultural backgrounds, and transcendence in painting.

Through the diverse expressions of paintings using gold leaf and metal leaf, this exhibition aims to explore the history and future of painting while also contributing to the exchange of Japanese and Korean art.
