As part of the museum's activities to introduce Hokkaido sculptures, we are pleased to present an exhibition of Goro Suzuki (1939- ), a sculptor based in Otaru, Hokkaido.
Suzuki's career as a sculptor spans more than 60 years, beginning with his graduation from the Hokkaido University of Arts and Sciences Sapporo Branch (now Hokkaido University of Education, Sapporo Campus). He has consistently pursued figurative sculptures of the human body, and especially since 1980, he has created many terra cotta sculptures of women. The color and texture of the fired clay give a sense of warmth, and the delicate, light, and incomparable expressions can be seen in the softly bent figure, crossed arms and legs, and gracefully extended fingertips. The works are the result of a search for a dignified expression of the oriental spirit in a simple technique that can be likened to earthenware and haniwa clay figures while incorporating Western figurative expression.
This exhibition traces the artist's 60-year career from his early years to the present, with approximately 50 sculptures and drawings divided into five chapters. In addition, approximately 60 public sculptures installed in various locations in Hokkaido will be introduced on panels. In addition, through the screening of a video interview and related programs, the exhibition will explore Goro Suzuki's world from various perspectives, including his work as an art teacher at Otaru Choryo High School and Sapporo Nishi High School.
