Hakka and Japan: Another History of East Asian Relations Created by Chinese Overseas

National Museum of Ethnology
Finished
Among the overseas Chinese, there is a group known as the Hakka people. The Hakka, who have settled around the world and achieved success in various fields such as politics, economics, and culture, are sometimes referred to as the "Jews of the East." Since the late 19th century, the Hakka have developed a close relationship with Japan. Particularly after Japan colonized Taiwan in 1895, Japan became a familiar presence to the Hakka in Taiwan. Additionally, some Hakka migrated from Taiwan and other regions to Japan, forming communities and establishing their lives there. By focusing on the relationship between the Hakka and Japan, we can explore a lesser-known aspect of East Asian history.
