Hakuran (Exposition) - Exhibiting the Power of Modern Kyoto

Ryukoku Museum
Finished
The word "exposition" means to collect a wide range of objects and materials for the purpose of hobby, research, or social development, and to open them to the public. Expositions and exhibitions are such events, and museums are their permanent institutions.

From the Meiji period to the prewar Showa period, expositions and exhibitions held in Kyoto, as well as museums established in the city, used various methods to collect display materials. In addition, they also devised ways of displaying them (exhibition techniques) and designs (exhibition structures).

This exhibition focuses on Japan’s first exposition, "Kyoto Exposition," "Nishi-Honganji Shurankai," a large-scale exhibition that has been held since the early Meiji period (1868-1912) to convey the Buddhist teachings of the Jodo Shin sect, the "Buddhist Children's Museum," a museum dedicated to teaching Buddhism to children, and the Hirase Shell Museum, a pioneering natural history museum in Kyoto.
