Based in Helmond, the Netherlands, artist Hans van den Berkmortel places images of horses across vibrant fields of color, scattered here and there.
The artist describes his practice: “I’m not drawing horses – I’m letting them run across the canvas.” His paintings are made with oil paint, ink, acrylics, brushes, sponges, cloths, and sometimes his bare hands. They are traces of the act of painting itself. Layering, adding, and erasing—this accumulation of gestures creates his distinctive compositions.
The artist continues to choose what to keep and what to remove, and within this pared-down structure, he brings the act of seeing itself into focus. The horses that appear here are neither narrative nor symbol, but recurring visual motifs that move through the canvas, creating depth that sinks inward. This exhibition is a place to experience the dynamism on canvas, woven through vivid colors and simple compositions.
