In 1985, with the construction of the new wing, the current building of the Yamagata Museum of Art, a new collection policy was established, focusing on 20th-century French painting. The 60 paintings by major artists such as Rouault, Picasso, and Chagall, as well as contemporary artists active in the Paris art world at the time, and 4 sculptures by Rodin, Bourdelle, and Maillol, are known as the "Hattori Collection" in honor of the achievements of the first director, Takao Hattori, who was also president of the Yamagata Shimbun at the time.
During Hattori's tenure, many domestic artists active in the central art world, such as Nitten and Inten, visited Yamagata, and excellent works by Yukame Ogura, Takuji Nakamura, and Eien Iwahashi, who served as jurors for the Prefectural Art Exhibition, were collected in Yamagata.
This exhibition will present an overview of the flow of French art in the 20th century through the Hattori Collection and introduce approximately 80 Japanese and Western paintings by Ogura, Tokuhei Kumagai, Ryohei Koiso, Kaii Higashiyama, Tamako Kataoka, and others.
