Artists

Hazan Itaya
Hazan Itaya, a master of modern ceramics, was born in Ibaraki Prefecture in 1872. In 1953 he became the first craftsman to be awarded the Order of Cultural Merit.

In 2022, the 150th anniversary of his birth, this exhibition will show a selection of masterpieces from the Sumitomo Collection and other Itaya masterpieces of elegance and prestige, born of his strong belief in no compromise.

Through rediscovered works, ceramic shards excavated from kiln sites, and letters, the exhibition introduces the personality of Hazan Itaya, a man who loved his hometown and its people dearly.
