In the late Edo period (1603-1867), the area of present-day Oita Prefecture was marked by the activities of nanga artists such as Chikuden Tanomura, and this trend continued into the Meiji period (1868-1912). From the 1890s onward, new Japanese-style painters began to emerge under the influence of art (drawing) teachers such as Komura Matsumoto, who was assigned to the old Oita Junior High School, and Bijiro Fujiwara, who was assigned to the Oita Prefectural Teachers' Training College.

Uko Shuto, Kangai Takakura, Kodo Maki, and Heihachiro Fukuda, all from present-day Oita City, studied at the Oita Prefectural Normal School and the former Oita Junior High School, and then at the Kyoto Municipal College of Arts and Crafts and the Kyoto Municipal College of Painting, where their works were selected for the Bunten and Teiten exhibitions. Heihachiro Fukuda, in particular, received a special prize for "Carp" at the Teiten in 1921 and became one of the leading Japanese painters of the Taisho and Showa periods. The development of modern Japanese painting in Oita was pioneered by these four artists.

In 1910, it was Uko Shuto who encouraged Fukuda to go to Kyoto, and it was Kangai Takakura who wrote a letter of introduction to the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts. When Fukuda continued to work in Kyoto, he formed the "Maan-kai" in his hometown of Oita, and one of the main members of this group was Kodo Maki. One of the main members of this group was Kodo Maki, with whom Fukuda continued to communicate on occasion, and they left behind joint works of art.

This exhibition introduces the works and materials of Heihachiro Fukuda, who celebrates the 130th anniversary of his birth, as well as work and materials of painters associated with Oita who were active in the world of modern Japanese painting, such as Uko Shuto, Kangai Takakura, and Kodo Maki, to introduce a part of the development of Japanese painting.
