Kameido Art Center is pleased to present “Pointless,” a solo exhibition by Hermippe, an artist known for their meticulous and unique style that merges the new and the nostalgic through pixel art.
Over the past few years, Hermippe has incorporated elements of street art and fragments of everyday life into his work, depicting urban and personal memories from a distinctive perspective. In this exhibition, the artist presents a new series of landscape paintings that translate traces of his daily life and thoughts into visual form.
Comprising sixteen works, the series draws inspiration from places closely connected to the artist—such as Tama New Town, where he grew up; his current surroundings; and the exhibition venue itself, Kameido Art Center. Rendered in Hermippe’s signature limited palette, the landscapes blur the boundaries between reality and imagination, abstractly evoking emotions and memories that arise from these in-between spaces.
The exhibition title, “POINTLESS,” literally means “meaningless” or “without purpose.” Hermippe chose this title as a quiet resistance against the tendency to impose excessive “meaning” on artworks.
Like anonymous graffiti found throughout cityscapes—where even without clear intent or message, traces of the unseen artist remain—Hermippe reflects on the way contemporary communication often seeks to overanalyze and decode meaning, as seen on social media and in fan theories. By embracing ambiguity and the unknowable, the artist seeks to integrate a freer, more life-rooted approach to expression—closer to street culture or gaming than to traditional notions of art.
Another key component of the exhibition is a set of sixteen card works based on the paintings. Combining landscapes and text in a style reminiscent of traditional Japanese “karuta,” these cards also function as a game, developed in collaboration with game creator Iekiyo, Poietai, featuring an original set of rules.
The exhibition also features a participatory experience titled “Kunju ,” created in collaboration with Matoi, a fragrance atelier located within Ryodenji Temple, a place deeply connected to the Hermippe’s life. Visitors can infuse their own cloth or clothing with a specially made incense scent to take home—a gesture inspired by a Buddhist teaching that encourages cultivating good deeds daily, allowing them to permeate one’s being like fragrance.
We hope this exhibition—featuring Hermippe’s delicate expressions drawn from the in-between spaces of everyday life—transcends meaning and purpose, resonating freely with each viewer’s sensibility.a
