Hideki Kimura
Pola Museum Annex is proud to present the first large solo exhibition of artist Hideki Kimura "Street Art for Adult," opening on June 16, 2023 (Fri) and running until July 30 (Sun).
Hideki Kimura worked as a producer in the budding Japanese rock music era. In 2002, at the age of 60, he took up the brush and began work as a painter. Those works have adorned everything from sliding screens in the Kacho-den of Shoren-in Temple in Kyoto to Kansai International Airport, Kyoto City Zoo, and even in many cities (hence Street Art), as wall paintings in various retail facilities. The motifs of koi carp, tree peonies, and peafowl, common to traditional Japanese art, are depicted with rich expressions in vivid colors that truly stir the senses. The dynamic compositions, which make no clear division between wall and ceiling, are surely a result of his spending half a lifetime in the world of rock, granting a rhythm to his expression and energy.
Kimura is particular about where he paints: “Rather than standing at a canvas in my studio, I prefer to go out into the street and paint live,” which makes this exhibition at a gallery an even rare opportunity. Over 50 new pieces will be on display along with older, large-scale works such as painted sliding screens. Additionally, a piece commissioned by actress Kirin Kiki, a painted wooden door titled “Lotus revives,” will be displayed publicly for the first time. And for the first five days of the exhibition, Kimura plans to perform a live painting of a mural over three meters in size. Don’t miss this opportunity to witness Hideki Kimura’s unrestricted, playful, rock ‘n’ roll visions at the Pola Museum Annex.
