Based on a collection of works donated by Denchu Hirakushi, a sculptor from Ibara City, for his hometown, the museum, which opened in 1969, will reopen on April 18, 2023.
In the first exhibition after the reopening, selected works of Denchu Hirakushi from the museum's collection of over 1,000 pieces will be exhibited in celebration of the reopening. Hirakushi (1872-1969) was born in Nishiebara-cho, present-day Ibara City, and studied under Shoko Nakatani, a doll maker in Osaka. Later, Hirakushi moved to Tokyo and began his career as a sculptor. As the wave of modernization swept over Japan, Hirakushi pursued his own unique artistic expression that fused modernity and tradition, while being inspired by Tenshin Okakura, who sought to revitalize Japanese art.
Over 90 works will be on display, including "Prototype Kagami-shishi (Mirror Lion)" and "Infant Dog Hariko," two of the most popular works in the museum's collection, in the newly renovated exhibition hall.
